Cuomo reroute plan for Metro-North during emergencies

Metro-North trains would use Amtrak rails to reach Penn Station during an emergency like the East Harlem building blast, under a new plan by Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

Riders could travel along Amtrak’s Hell Gate Line through The Bronx and Queens to get to Penn Station if a crisis shuts down Metro-North’s line to Grand Central Terminal.

Service was crippled on March 12 when the explosion rained debris on the tracks at 116th Street and Park Avenue, stranding some commuters at Grand Central for hours and forcing others to go to The Bronx via the subway to catch northbound trains.

The $516 million project is part of a larger $4.9 billion regional emergency plan Cuomo is proposing to the feds.
