Gowanus apts. to sink or swim

They’ve gotten the green light — as long as developers of housing along the Gowanus Canal can keep out the bright-green water.

The City Planning Commission yesterday OK’d a controversial plan to build 700 rental apartments along the toxic Brooklyn waterway after the developers agreed to a redesign that will protect residents from flooding on the scale of a Hurricane Sandy deluge.

The Manhattan-based Lightstone Group is pulling the housing back 17 feet so the closest building will be 66 1/2 feet from the canal.

Lobby areas will be raised to 10.6 feet above the floodplains. Heating, air conditioning and power systems will be moved out of the basements and relocated to upper floors.

Lightstone is set to break ground later this year.
