Two shot dead at cookouts on bloody weekend in city

City barbecues turned deadly Sunday as two people were fatally shot, raising the number of weekend shootings to 21.

Keshon Porterfield, 17, was killed shortly after midnight in a back yard on East 232nd Street in The Bronx’s Wakefield section. Witnesses and cops said nearly 200 people had been crowded into the yard for a party that was promoted over Facebook and featured lots of booze, drug paraphernalia and little food.

A girl, 17, was shot in the foot, and a boy, also 17, was shot in the leg as partygoers raced out of the yard through a long driveway and over a barbed-wire fence.

Porterfield was shot in the chest and died at Montefiore Medical Center.

Although cops said Porterfield appeared to have been the intended target, friends and fellow partygoers said he was shot protecting a girl.

“He pushed her out of the way and got the bullet that was going for her,” said Porterfield’s sister, Christine Johnson, 22. “She said he was her angel.”

A little more than an an hour later, a man was fatally shot at another barbecue, this one in Brooklyn.

Donnell Smith, 26, was dead on arrival at Brookdale Hospital after being shot in the head on Powell Street.

In all, nine people were shot Sunday, after 12 were shot on Friday and Saturday.
