This season’s most-shocking TV deaths

It seems that every week some major character on a television show is getting murdered. And we’re not even talking about cop shows.

Sunday night’s shocking death of “The Good Wife” mainstay Will Gardner (Josh Charles) recalled others from this season.

Warning: Spoilers ahead!

Sgt. Nicholas Brody, ‘Homeland’

Damian Lewis as Nicholas Brody in “Homeland.”

Captured in enemy territory, the terrorist Nicholas Brody (Damian Lewis) could not use his CIA connections to get off, and was hung in a public square in Iran with his girlfriend Carrie Mathison (Claire Danes) looking on.

Zoe Barnes, ‘House of Cards’

Kate Mara as Zoe Barnes in “House of Cards.”

Once Frank Underwood (Kevin Spacey) became Vice President, he needed to erase any evidence that he spent a year feeding White House secrets to reporter Zoe Barnes (Kate Mara). For her part, Barnes was beginning to connect Underwood to the murder of Congressman Peter Russo and she thought she could charm Underwood into a making his involvement clear. Trouble is, she agreed to meet him in a Washington, DC subway station. Underwood asked her to erase his contact info from her smart phone. Once she did, he beckoned her to the rear part of the platform, where they would be hidden. Then, when a train roared into the station, he pushed her on the tracks.

Taraji P. Henson, ‘Person of Interest’

Taraji P. Henson as Det. Carter in “Person of Interest.”

Det. Carter (Taraji P. Henson) was killed in a shootout on the popular CBS drama. Reese (Jim Caviezel) was also shot, but he survived his injuries.

James Novak, ‘Scandal’

Jeff Perry as Cyrus Beene (left) and Dan Bucatinsky as James Novak (right) in “Scandal.”

White House press secretary James Novak had access to a tape that proved the vice president (Kate Burton) murdered her husband. White House chief of staff Cyrus Beene (Jeff Perry), Novak’s husband, had worked very hard with the first lady (Bellamy Young) to cover up that crime. That Novak knew about it made him a goner. Beene told Novak how much he loved him. Later that night, Novak was shot in the back by a B-316 agent.

Will Gardner, ‘The Good Wife’

Josh Charles as Will Gardner in “The Good Wife.”

Gardner’s defense of suspected murderer Jeffrey Grant (Hunter Parrish) was going south. All the evidence pointed to his guilt. When Kalinda (Archie Panjabi) phoned Will with a new wrinkle in the case, evidence that could possibly exonerate his client, Will requested a sidebar with the judge. While Will, the prosecuting attorney and the judge discussed the case, Grant grabbed the court officer’s revolver and started shooting up the joint. Gardner was slain in the crossfire.

Mika and Lizzie, ‘The Walking Dead’

Melissa Suzanne McBride as Carol (left) and Brighton Sharbino as Lizzie (right)

Viewers recoiled as a creaky episode suddenly exploded with emotion, in the form of a bloody Mika (Kyla Kenedy), laying dead as her older sister, Lizzie (Brighton Sharbino), held the knife that killed her. The increasingly delusional Lizzie believed that her sister would reanimate to become her zombie BFF, and was just seconds from sending baby Judith to the great undead beyond as well.

So it was sad yet understandable when Carol (Melissa McBride) took Lizzie for a walk and told her to look at the pretty flowers, gun raised toward her head. One episode, two murdered little girls — can any other show get away with such brutality?
