MLB: Papelbon saves Phils’ win over Red Sox

In Boston, Cliff Lee pitched eight innings of four-hit ball but gave way in the ninth to Jonathan Papelbon, the former Red Sox closer who earned his first save at Fenway Park as a Red Sox opponent as the Phillies won 3-1.

Papelbon retired his former teammates in order for his 10th save of the season.

In Toronto, Brian McCann hit two home runs, including a solo shot in the 10th inning that lifted the Braves over the Blue Jays 7-6.

In St. Petersburg, Fla., Desmond Jennings drove in the winning run with a two-out single in the bottom of the ninth inning, lifting the Rays to a 7-6 victory over the Marlins.

In Detroit, Neil Walker ended a lengthy pitching duel with a home run in the 11th inning, lifting the Pirates over the Tigers 1-0.

HOOPS: Hawks tab Spurs assistant

The Hawks named longtime Spurs assistant Mike Budenholzer as head coach, giving the team another link to San Antonio’s championship tradition.

He replaces Larry Drew as coach. Drew’s contract expires in June following three seasons as coach.

The Suns have hired Jeff Hornacek, who spent the first six years of his 14-year career in Phoenix, as their new coach. Hornacek had been an assistant with the Jazz.

Andrew Gaze, the Australian who helped Seton Hall reach the 1989 NCAA championship game, will be inducted into the FIBA Hall of Fame. David Robinson and Pat Summitt are also among those to be enshrined.

TENNIS: Djokovic takes first step at French

In Paris, top-seeded Novak Djokovic began his bid to win his first French Open title with a 7-6 (5), 6-4, 7-5 victory against 58th-ranked David Goffin of Belgium.

Djokovic is trying to complete a career Grand Slam. He lost to Rafael Nadal in last year’s final.

Renowned orthopedic surgeon Lewis Yocum, who extended the careers of many big league pitchers, died of liver cancer Saturday in Manhattan Beach, Calif. He was 66.

English football’s main anti-racism organization is working on creating a mobile phone application for fans to lodge complaints about racist abuse at matches when the new season begins in August.

Cullen Finnerty, the quarterback who led Grand Valley State University to three Division II national titles, was found dead in the northern Michigan woods days after disappearing while out fishing near his family’s cottage.

The 30-year-old’s body was found in woods within a mile of where he disappeared. Foul play was not suspected.
