CHICAGO — Ike Davis wasn’t happy he was passed over by the Mets for promotion on Sunday, but yesterday he received the prize behind Door No. 2: Pacific Coast League Player of the Week.
The first baseman won the award after batting .474 with four homers in six games at Triple-A Las Vegas last week.
According to sources, Davis was disappointed he wasn’t recalled by the Mets on Sunday, when Lucas Duda got placed on the disabled list with a strained left rib cage muscle, but he was appeased after speaking with general manager Sandy Alderson, who was visiting the Triple-A club.
Zach Lutz instead got the promotion.
Manager Terry Collins indicated Sunday that Davis could be in position to rejoin the Mets as soon as Thursday in Colorado. Team brass wasn’t high on the idea of recalling the left-handed hitter with the White Sox scheduled to pitch lefties the next two games.
* David Wright would prefer not to be the DH either tonight or tomorrow against the White Sox, but Collins indicated it might be an option to give the third baseman a rest.
“I’m not a huge fan of DHing,” Wright said. “But if he feels it would be better for me physically, then I’ll give it a go. If he’s doing it to try and get me a rest, I’d probably rather play the game and just get a full day off [later].”
* Collin Cowgill, who was designated for assignment last week, still could be traded. According to a team source, the Mets were recently rebuffed by the Angels in a trade proposal that would have returned Triple-A pitcher Matt Shoemaker for Cowgill.
* The Mets signed pitcher Giancarlo Alvarado, according to a source, and assigned him to Triple-A. Alvarado, a 35-year-old right-hander, was pitching in the Mexican League.
