City bumblers block a Lower East Side fire hydrant with bike-share rack

Bumbling workers dangerously put a Citi Bike rack right in front of a Lower East Side fire hydrant, infuriating residents.

The rack was installed on Friday in front of 305 Madison St., near Montgomery Street — after it was accidentally first placed on private property at nearby Gouverneur Street

“They have an obligation to move it,” said lawyer Jeffrey Reich, who represents the building.

Citi Bike workers installed the rack in front of the hydrant — because a city map erroneously showed there was a defunct fire hydrant there, according to a DOT spokesman.

Local residents said they were stunned by the move.

“The city doesn’t think sometimes!” said Jason Simmons, a retired construction laborer. “They’d have to move the bikes to get a truck here. Maybe they can snake it through, but not if it’s all filled up.”

“This is not Amsterdam, it’s New York City,” said Israel Miranda, who is president of EMS Union Local 2507. “You don’t have to be a fireman, but common sense would tell you that anytime you block the view or access to a fire hydrant in any way, it could be dangerous.”

After The Post asked about the rack, Citi Bike officials arrived at the location yesterday afternoon and removed eight bikes that were blocking the hydrant.
