Rand Paul: The GOP’s future?

The Issue: Whether libertarian Sen. Rand Paul should be a model for the Republican Party.

***

How long will Sen. Rand Paul’s moment last (“Rand Paul’s Moment,” Rich Lowry, PostOpinion, June 22)?

He is currently on a roll, capitalizing on every opportunity to catapult himself into the political limelight. Sometimes Paul is a loose cannon who says outlandish things that get him a lot of attention in the media.

Paul’s presidential aspirations will wither if he and his party cannot appeal significantly to a wider range of voters, like minorities, women and the LGBT community.

His personal delusions of grandeur would not serve America well if he ever became president.

If he is the Republican nominee in 2016, his party should just change its name to the Republican Tea Party. I hope his moment in the sun is brief.Paul L. Whiteley

It’s time for Establishment Republicans like Rich Lowry to wake up to the fact that “their way” has been a big part of the reason the nation’s suffering under government run amok.

We’ve tried big-government Republicans and Democrats alike with the same results: massive debt, endless foreign entanglements and massive abrogations of our fundamental rights and liberties.

Smaller government is the only path out of our mess, and it’s the only path to the White House for the GOP.

Instead of damning Paul and the libertarians with faint praise, perhaps Lowry & Co. should rethink their own views a bit and hop on board with the liberty movement.
