Greta Gerwig’s 6 favorite places in New York

Greta Gerwig’s screen career evolved from lo-fi indies to 2012’s love letter to Manhattan, “Frances Ha,” which she co-wrote with her boyfriend, director Noah Baumbach.

This artistic trajectory reflects Gerwig’s personal one. The actress, 30, has lived in nearly every borough — “I was in the not-fancy part of Brooklyn,” she recalls — and now calls Greenwich Village home, allowing her to walk to her gig headlining the new play “The Village Bike” at the Lucille Lortel Theatre. This is her New York.

“My favorite theater. The bathroom is at the back of the stage — so you get to walk on the stage. I’ve seen some of my favorite things there, like ‘The Aliens’ by Annie Baker. It’s right next door to Taïm (222 Waverly Pl.), my favorite falafel place. I always get the extra hot sauce and an egg in my sandwich — I like having too much stuff in a sandwich. To eat a falafel at Taïm and see a play at the Rattlestick is the best night to me.”

“I love the armor room. When I was at Barnard I used to study there. It felt decadent to do my reading next to armor. I loooove that. It satisfies something inside me, the same part that wanted to be an actor: The horses, the knights, the different armor from all over the world — it makes me feel theatrical and big.”

“I love drinking beer on the Staten Island ferry. It’s the only public transportation that sells alcohol, which I think is amazing.”

[As a student], I saw so many things at the New York City Ballet and the Met because I could get cheap rush tickets. You get out of the subway and there’s the fountain. It’s incredibly romantic and grand — it always makes me feel like I’m in a movie. I’ve never performed or shot [at Lincoln Center] but I’ve always wanted to. I hope one day the world works out and I get to do it.”

Swat Bar, 59 Canal St., between Orchard and Allen Streets

“The most perfect bar there is. The alcohol is cheap, and the bar is above a station for buses to Atlantic City. And there’s karaoke, though it’s not strictly a karaoke bar. It’s so odd — it feels like an older New York, or a different kind of New York. I had my 30th birthday party there, and many people don’t remember much of it, which makes me feel it was a really good birthday party.”

“I love living close to a university — I like being around young people. Because I live in Greenwich Village I can be a member [of Bobst]. Everything in there looks like it’s from the ’60s, which is fabulous and funny. I bring my laptop and work on scripts. At Barnard I did this thing called the Varsity Show, and a lot of our time was spent making fun of NYU, but we were 19 years old and insecure about our own place in the world.”
