De Blasio’s lower speed limits find Albany Senate sponsor

Mayor de Blasio’s plan to lower the city speed limit to 25 mph as part of Vision Zero has found a last-minute state Senate sponsor.

Sen. Jeffrey Klein, who represents The Bronx and Westchester, will introduce a modified bill Thursday to lower the speed limit on two-lane and one-lane roads from 30 to 25 mph.

Roads with three lanes or more could have the speed limit increased, but that would require a request from local community boards. The deadline to pass bills in the state Legislature is June 19.

“I believe in the whole concept of making our city streets safer by reducing the speed limit, but believe when we’re dealing with larger roadways, like Pelham Parkway or Queens Boulevard, we need to have input from the local community boards,” Klein said.
