Neighboring family to sue over Harlem gas blast

An East Harlem family is planning to sue the city for $10 million over last month’s deadly gas explosion after it knocked them from their beds, leaving them surrounded by “debris and smoke,” according to a notice of claim filed with the city comptroller’s office.

Grandmother Soda Sar, mother Sokhna Ndiaye and son Mouhamed Diao were asleep in their apartment at 1652 Park Ave. when the neighboring building collapsed on March 12.

They fell to the floor and scrambled to get out of the apartment but were kept back by “a lot of debris and smoke,” the claim says.

The family escaped, but they were exposed to “toxic elements,” the filing states.

At least three other people have sued the city for negligence.

A city Law Department spokesman declined to comment because the claim is in “the pre-litigation phase.”
