Majority of NYers to reach 100 years old are women

A whopping 83 percent of the 2,096 people over the age of 100 living in the Big Apple are women, according to 2010 US Census data.

The same trend applies at the state and national levels too, as 81 percent of the 55,000 centenarians in the United States are female.

As for other factors, education is apparently not the key to longevity.

A breakdown of US data by the American Community Survey released Wednesday revealed that 43 percent of centenarians have less than a high-school education compared to only 23 percent of those 65 and over. Men were more likely than women to have graduated from college, with 21 percent of centenarian men claiming a bachelor’s degree or higher as opposed to 14 percent of women.

Few ladies who made it to the century mark did so with husbands: Among women, only 3 percent are married, compared to 41 percent of women 65 and older. As for men, 23 percent of male centenarians are married, while 71 percent of men 65-plus have spouses.
