MTA searching for owner of lost scrolls

The MTA wants to find the owners of two parchment scrolls that were discovered in the transit system, officials said.

The missing tefillins are small, black leather boxes with parchment inside that has Hebrew verses on it from the Torah.

They are often given as bar mitzvah gifts.

The religious objects were found six months ago by the MTA’s Lost Property Unit, and are being stored at a Howard Beach temple.

Chaplain Harry Berkowitz tracked down the owner of another missing tefillin earlier this month after it was found on the R train.

It was in a large bag with a Hebrew prayer book and shawl.

After picking it up from a Lost and Found supervisor, he tracked down the family within a couple of days through Facebook.

“They were very sentimental, very happy,” he said. “They were grateful.”

Any subway or bus rider who thinks one of the missing tefillins is theirs should file a claim at the Lost and Found in Penn Station’s A, C, and E subway station.
