INTERMIX FASHIONING A WEST SIDE STORE

Intermix is blazing a trail to the West.

The trendy boutique that got its start catering to the Downtown crowd and then moved on to the ritzy Upper East Side is now set to open a store on the Upper West Side.

The new Intermix shop will open in the Fall at 210 Columbus Ave. , between 69th and 70th Streets – formerly the site of Japanese restaurant Rikyu – and will join fellow clothing stores Banana Republic and Nautica in an area more known for bagels and lox than designers.

That fact, however, has not deterred Intermix owner Khajak Keledjian, who hopes to turn the Columbus Avenue strip into a fashion destination.

“The customer has spoken, and she told us that we are needed on the West Side,” Keledjian told The Post.

“There isn’t any real fashion on the West Side – besides mom-and-pop stores and chain stores. Why should a West Sider have to cross the park to go shopping?”

The new store will be one of four Intermix shops to open this year. The boutique has already opened its doors in Miami’s South Beach and New Jersey’s Garden State Plaza, and it will bow on Boston’s Newbury Street in the fall.

Keledjian said it was all part of his plan to blanket the East Coast with his brand of trendy, designer clothes.

Once that’s accomplished, he said, he’ll head to the West Coast.

“We’re aggressive but careful in our expansion approach. It must be the ideal location for us – or we won’t do it,” he noted.

Keledjian added he waited more than a year for the West Side spot to come up, believing customers who pay to join the exclusive Reebok gym down the block will also pay for designer duds.

He expects to ring up above-average sales per square foot but won’t give sales projections.

Intermix opened its first store on lower Fifth Avenue seven years ago and has since grown into a clothing mini-empire, including three locations in Japan. It has developed a big celebrity clientele, selling hot-ticket items from both established as well as up-and-coming designers to the likes of Madonna, Gwyneth Paltrow and Cameron Diaz.
