COMING SOON: HAWK POINTE

NEW Jersey gets more upscale public golf this week when scenic Hawk Pointe opens for play on Wednesday.

Hawk Pointe, designed by Kelly Blake Moran, is a semi-private course in Washington, N.J., about a 75-minute drive from Manhattan. It features rolling hills, a little history and the potential for a marvelous clubhouse and practice facility, which are in the plans to come later.

The course was originally scheduled to open this weekend, but recent weather problems pushed the opening to Wednesday. The cost to the public is $75 from Monday through Thursday, including a cart, and $95 from Friday through Sunday and on holidays, also including a cart.

Memberships are available for an initiation of a $15,000 bond that’s refundable when and if you leave the club, and the dues are $325 per month. Members may reserve tee times up to 14 days in advance. The general public may reserve up to seven days.

The date for the completion of the clubhouse is 2002. There are also plans for a short course for practicing. The yardage from the back tees is 6,907 yards, then 6,380, 5,611 and 4,760. Par is 72.

Brian Campbell is the director of golf and can be reached by calling 908-689-1870, which is also the number for reservations.

The address is 294 Route 31 North, Washington, N.J., 07882. From Manhattan, get onto Route 78 West to Route 31 North and drive about 15 minutes north. The course is on the right, across the street from a Burger King.
