BASEBALL: McClung banned

Brewers reliever Seth McClung was suspended for three games and Milwaukee manager Ned Yost for one after the commissioner’s office concluded yesterday the pitcher intentionally hit the Cardinals’ Albert Pujols with a pitch a night earlier after a warning had been issued. Bob Watson, baseball VP in charge of discipline, also said both Yost and McClung were fined.

* The union for baseball umpires will not contest the season-ending suspension given to Mike Winters for using a profanity aimed at San Diego’s Milton Bradley last weekend.

* Infielder Mark Bellhorn was brought up from the minor leagues yesterday by the Reds, who transferred left-hander Bobby Livingston to the 60-day disabled list.

GOLF: DeMaria wins Met PGA

Willow Ridge’s Tony DeMaria hung on to post a one-shot victory over Atlantic’s Rick Hartmann in the $100,000 Met PGA Championship yesterday at the Stanwich Club in Greenwich. DeMaria shot a 5-over 77 to finish the 54-hole event at 215. Hartmann closed with 67 and finished one shot ahead of third-place finisher Keith Dicciani of Metropolis.

* Briny Baird shot a 9-under 63 for a three-shot lead after the first round of the Viking Classic in Madison, Miss. . . . Stacy Prammanasudh shot a 6-under 66 to take a three-shot lead over Lorena Ochoa in the opening round of the LPGA Navistar Classic in Prattville, Ala.

* Continental Europe took a 3-2 lead over Great Britain and Ireland after the first fourball matches at the Seve Trophy yesterday in Killenard, Ireland.

HOOPS: Thompson re-ups

Georgetown basketball coach John Thompson III signed a six-year contract extension yesterday that will keep him with the Hoyas through 2013.

GRID: Jones to Cincinnati

Former Notre Dame quarterback Demetrius Jones enrolled at Cincinnati, where he’ll be eligible to run their no-huddle, spread offense next season.

Jones started Notre Dame’s season opener against Georgia Tech and fumbled twice in the 33-3 defeat – the worst opening loss in Irish history. Last week, Notre Dame agreed to release him from his scholarship as long as he transferred to a school that is not on its schedule.
