SUMMER OF ‘77

Remember the sizzling, scintillating summer of 1977 when Billy Martin’s Yankees stormed past the Red Sox and went on to capture their first World Championship in 15 years by beating the Dodgers in six games as Reggie Jackson blasted three home runs in the grand finale?

In this series, The Post takes you back 30 years to one of the greatest seasons in Yankee history.

SEPTEMBER 29, 1977

YANKEES 10, CLEVELAND 0

Sometime late this evening it will be remembered that Reggie Jackson and Thurmon Munson kissed and made up, that George Steinbrenner and Billy Martin arrived at the same point through different avenues, that the Yankees of ’77 found peace in their time.

The Yankees clinched a tie for theAmerican League East championship last night with a smashing 10-0 victory over the Indians. The Magic Number is one.

Boston could have been eliminated this afternoon with a Fenway loss and Baltimore will be out at night with a Yankee win or a loss of their own.

Ed Figueroa faces Wayne Garland tonight, Cleveland’s million dollar baby with a ten cent season, in the potential clincher. The Yankees lead both Boston and Baltimore by four games with only four to play.

Last night’s game was blown open early, as it so often has been in September, by Jackson’s grand slam in the first inning. Mickey Rivers, Thurman Munson and Graig Nettles also homered to make it easy.
