Wrestler Capt. Lou Albano dead at 76

Captain Lou Albano, the pro-wrestler and manager who starred in Cindy Lauper’s “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” video, has died. He was 76.

Albano was in hospice care in recent weeks suffering from an undisclosed illness, according to the Miami Herald.

He began his career in the 1960s as half of the Sicilians tag team. From 1983 to 1996 he worked as part of World Wrestling Entertainment’s productions.

Albano managed tag-team wrestlers including the Masked Executioners, Mongols, Yukon Lumberjacks, Moondogs and Wild Samoans, according to the Miami Herald.

He was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 1996.

But it was playing Lauper’s finger-wagging father in the “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” video that made Albano a pop culture figure.

Albano also appeared in Lauper’s video for “Good Enough” from the movie “The Goonies.”

“With his open Hawaiian shirts, outrageous facial hair and trademark rubber bands hanging from his cheek, Captain Lou may not have looked like much of a success, but his record speaks for itself,” WWE said in his bio on its Web site.
