GREAT EX-PECTATIONS

OLD flames die hard. Just ask Travis, the 27-year-old senior trafficking specialist who met up with 23-year-old Leo at the Libertine in the Gild Hall Hotel. Though Travis liked the freelance writer’s witty personality as they bonded over talk of their summers in Vermont, his mind was somewhere else — on an ex! What could have been an excellent date quickly became less than extraordinary.

He said:

Leo showed up looking absolutely adorable. We were both a bit nervous at first, but after a couple drinks we were able to relax.

Later, Leo opened up over some great conversation. We talked about a lot — family, life, love, work. Through it all, I really liked Leo’s personality. She was easy to talk to and had the dry, witty sense of humor I look forward to. We probably could’ve spent all night in that booth talking and laughing.

After dinner, we exchanged numbers. I look forward to seeing Leo again, but as friends. Though I’m technically single, an old flame kind of came back into my life after I agreed to go on the date! I didn’t bring it up on my date with Leo, because exes make for terrible date conversation, and I didn’t have the heart to ruin her evening. Still, I’d be happy to see her again. After all, this was my first blind date, and she made sure it was fun.

She said:

Clocking in at a whopping 5-foot-1, I’m not one to worry about height when it comes to dating, so I wore my tallest pumps. I felt a bit bad when I met Travis and he was shorter than me!

After that first impression, I thought Travis wasn’t my type, but I changed my mind as the conversation picked up. It’s easy to talk with a stranger about the basics, but Travis and I managed to spend most of the date talking on neutral ground, with both parties interested. I was especially impressed by his literary tastes. He said he was reading “Atlas Shrugged” for the second time, and another favorite was “The Fountainhead.” Rad.

Travis mentioned he liked my short hair and told me I was adorable, which could go either way. It could mean cute, which is the same adjective people use to describe teapots, or it could mean he thinks I’m pretty. Either way, I was happy with the date, gave him my info and left the ball in his court.
