THOMPSON CAMPAIGN WINS SILVER

Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver has quietly pledged his support to mayor wannabe Bill Thompson, a fellow Democrat.

“It was done a month ago,” Silver told The Post.

According to Silver’s spokesman, Dan Weillor, the speaker was questioned in June about the issue by the Downtown Express newspaper, which covers his district.

“Speaker Silver has already endorsed Bill Thompson for mayor,” Weillor said.

The fact that the endorsement of the city comptroller was made with such little fanfare could lessen any lingering bitterness between the independent Mayor Bloomberg and Silver.

The pair famously butted heads over a West Side stadium and congestion pricing, but, of late, they have worked together far more smoothly on the development of Ground Zero and on mayoral control of schools.

A spokeswoman for Thompson said, “We welcome the speaker’s support.”
