FAN POLL: YANKEES MORE POPULAR THAN METS

Pinstriped pride rules New York City on and off the field.

According to a Marist poll, 53 percent of registered voters in the city support the Yankees compared to 36 percent whose allegiance falls in Flushing. And even Mets fans were forced to admit their injury-ravaged team doesn’t have as good a chance of winning the World Series as the hated Yankees. Of the Amazin’s supporters polled, 53 percent said the Bronx Bombers will return to the Fall Classic this October. And 61 percent said the Yankees are currently the best team in New York.

But some fans kept their loyalty, perhaps blindly, with 26 percent of Mets fans voting that their team will win the National League this season. The Mets are 6 ½ games back of the first-place Phillies and are playing without three of their best players — Jose Reyes, Carlos Delgado and Carlos Beltran — and no one is exactly sure when any of them will return to the lineup.

The Yankees are three games behind Red Sox, but do lead the wild-card standings. When the two teams met in two Subway Series earlier this season the Yankees took five of six games, including a sweep at Citi Field in the second matchup.
