PSAL girls basketball rankings

The regular season wrapped up last week and the playoffs are still a week away.

Things might be quiet this week, but the controversial seeding – many believed Francis Lewis should have been No. 2, not No. 4 – could cause a ruckus.

Here are this week’s rankings:

1. Murry Bergtraum (21-0) (Last week: 1)

There was no way Bergtraum wasn’t going to be seeded first in the PSAL Class AA playoffs Saturday. The Lady Blazers have been dominant all season and Saturday they routed Central Dauphin (Pa.) in a game in which senior Doris Ortega earned her 1,000th career point. The road to a 12th straight city title begins next week.

2. John F. Kennedy (17-7) (3)

The Knights started the season near the bottom of this top 10, but have surged up toward the top. That’s a credit to coach O’Neil Glenn, but also a product of the bizarre nature of the league this year. Kennedy will try to get into playoff mode Saturday when it hosts Molloy.

Next: Archbishop Molloy (Feb. 20, 3 p.m.)

3. Francis Lewis (18-4) (2)

It wasn’t a very good Sunday for Lewis. The Patriots lost to Archbishop Molloy and then learned that they’ll be seeded fourth in the PSAL Class AA playoffs. Just about everyone expected Lewis to earn a No. 2 seed.

4. South Shore (16-7) (5)

The Vikings will be going for the Staten Island sweep Wednesday. They beat Moore Catholic last month, MSIT last week and now take on St. Peter’s on the Island. It doesn’t get much stiffer of a test for South Shore, which earned the third seed in the PSAL ‘AA’ playoffs.

Next: @ St. Peter’s (Feb. 17, 3 p.m.)

5. McKee/S.I. Tech (23-2) (4)

MSIT lost to South Shore on Friday in a game rife with controversial calls. The loss looks even worse for the Sea Gulls now considering South Shore earned the third seed in the ‘AA’ playoffs, while Tech will be fifth.

6. Midwood (14-11) (6)

The Hornets lost twice at the end of last week, including once in a shocker to Lincoln. But the teams below also were upset, so Midwood keeps the status quo at No. 6.

Next: TBA

7. Manhattan Center (14-10) (7)

Center lost to Truman last week in a stunner, but still earned the seventh seed in the playoffs and faces a potential matchup with Kennedy in the quarterfinals. That’s exactly what coach Jaywana Bradley and company wanted – a chance to avenge a loss two weeks ago to the Knights.

Next: TBA

8. Thomas Jefferson (12-7) (8)

The Orange Wave had a better seed at hand. All they needed to do was beat Boys & Girls, a team it routed earlier this season, on Friday. But Jefferson couldn’t do it and it is now stuck in the eight hole. That means a probable date with No. 1 Bergtraum in the quarterfinals.

Next: TBA

9. Medgar Evers (20-2) (9)

As expected, Medgar Evers earned the top seed in the ‘A’ playoffs. The Cougars won’t exactly cruise to a title, though. Especially since freshman star Camera Miley has left the team and might not return, according to coach Barney Davis.

Next: TBA

10. West 50th Street (21-4) (10)

The Seahawks must be glad the regular season is over – no more 66-5 victories like they had last week against Brandeis. Everything gets tougher now as the playoffs begin. West 50th Street will be the second seed in the ‘A’ postseason.
