Ready to Rapture

The recent trend in political documentaries is for filmmakers to heap ridicule and sarcasm on people they don’t agree with, a la Michael Moore.

“Waiting for Armageddon” (which has nothing to do with the 1998 Michael Bay movie) demonstrates that sometimes it’s far more devastating to simply point the camera at your subjects and let them talk.

Filmmakers Kate Davis, David Heilbroner and Franco Sacchi focus on Evangelical Christians who devoutly believe the world-ending Rapture is near. Rather than trotting out fringe figures, they present mainstream moms and pops calmly talking about how they don’t believe their kids are going to live to graduate from college.

Even though some of the interviewees are scientists and politicians, it’s hard not to think of them as meshuga. Especially when we hear Evangelical Christians donate $75 million a year to Israel — in the hopes the population will embrace the second coming of Christ before the imminent arrival of Judgment Day. Or else.
