Millionaires’ welfare ‘con’

A Brooklyn couple sitting on a $2.2 million bank account was among 32 people charged with ripping off a total of $1 million in welfare benefits from the city, prosecutors said yesterday.

“This is an example of just out-of-control fraud and ripping off taxpayers,” said Brooklyn DA Charles Hynes.

Hynes’ office has been charging people over the past month with crimes ranging from misuse of food stamps to Medicaid fraud.

Among those charged were Ariel and Joyce Soudry, landlords and property managers who allegedly lied about their assets on applications to get $59,000 in Medicaid benefits over a six-year period.

Hynes said the couple owned properties in Long Branch, NJ, and Brooklyn, and own three luxury vehicles — a Land Rover, an Audi and a Mercedes.

A lawyer for the Soudrys said their $2.2 million bank balance was misleading because the couple had debts amounting to nearly twice that. He did not comment directly on the allegations.
