NHL denies Islanders takeover

The NHL has neither assumed control of the Islanders nor loaned team owner Charles Wang so much as a nickel, deputy commissioner Bill Daly told The Post yesterday.

With multiple rumors relating to the franchise’s status circulating across various websites — reports that also claimed that no one from the league had denied such allegations — The Post posed a three-part question to Daly via e-mail that asked:

Whether the NHL is in any shape or form involved with Islanders’ ownership/financial/hockey decisions as it was at the start of the Coyotes scenario; whether Wang has “given back” the Islanders to the NHL; and whether the NHL has advanced or loaned any money to the Islanders.

“No, no and no,” Daly responded.

Questions concerning Wang’s commitment to maintaining his ownership of the franchise and to keeping the team on Long Island have been raised recently in the absence of news regarding progress on the Lighthouse Project or of any alternate plans for a new arena to replace the aged and inadequate Nassau Coliseum.
