Working Families Party urging liberals to support Cuomo

The head of the Working Families Party Friday urged liberals to support Andrew Cuomo in the Democratic primary for governor if he faces a challenge from lefty activist Zephyr Teachout.

The Post reported that Teachout, a Fordham U. Professor, began circulating petitions on Friday in her quest to take on the formidable Cuomo, heavily favored to win re-election.

The WFP last month endorsed Cuomo over Teachout in a contentious vote.

“We encourage progressives to support Gov. Cuomo in the Democratic primary and vote for him on the Working Families line in November,” said WFP state director Bill Lipton.

“Our priority is to work in coalitions with community groups, advocacy organizations, unions and elected officials across the state — including Mayor de Blasio — to win a Democratic-Working Families Senate Majority,” he said.

Cuomo and a Democratic-run legislature will spur passage of progressive laws such as boosting the minimum wage and helping immigrants obtain a college education, Lipton said.
