McDonell may helm CUNY J-school

The race to succeed Steve Shepard as the dean of the graduate school of journalism at the City University of New York has reached the finals — and former Sports Illustrated editorial director Terry McDonell is among the three finalists.

He is vying against Steven Waldman, the co-founder of Beliefnet, who since last year has been CEO of Brooklyn-based Daily Bridge Media, and insider Sarah Bartlett, a former assistant managing editor at Business Week with a long stretch in academia at CUNY’s J-school.

McDonell retired from Time Inc. and SI last year, where he had emerged as one of the early champions of the digital revolution and tablets as a way of combatting the ESPN juggernaut.

Shepard left Businessweek in 2005 to take the job as the founding dean of the CUNY school.
