CROSSING PATHS WITH DEATH

DAVID Twohy (“Pitch Black,” “The Chronicles of Riddick”) returns to his B- movie roots for “A Perfect Getaway,” a not-bad little thriller about a serial killer on the loose on the Hawaiian island of Kauai.

Steve Zahn and Milla Jovovich are a pair of newlyweds who learn of the murders while hiking a secluded trail.

Suspicions begin forming about two other couples they encounter along the way — intense hitchhikers Chris Hemsworth and Marley Shelton; and Timothy Olyphant and Kiele Sanchez, Southerners who seem normal only by comparison.

Twohy serves up a hard-to-swallow second-act twist and an unconvincing back story, but the slightly overlong “A Perfect Getaway” recovers with a pulse-pounding climax.

Running time: 98 minutes. Rated R (violence, profanity). At the Empire, Union Square.
