RYAN: QB BATTLE STILL DEAD HEAT

CORTLAND — The Jets’ quarterback competition is incomplete at the moment.

Coach Rex Ryan conceded yesterday that, through six days of training camp practices, the battle between Kellen Clemens and rookie Mark Sanchez is at a relative deadlock.

“A lot hasn’t changed [at the moment],” Ryan said. “Clemens has a better grasp of the system. They’ve both have had their moments and both have had moments where you’re like, ‘What are they doing?’

“We’ll start to see a little more as we scrimmage,” Ryan said, referring to today’s 6 p.m. “green and white” scrimmage.

“We’ll find out in the end [who’s the best]. You want to find out as soon as possible so you have a good feel of who’s going to be the guy and he’s taking the reps. But we’re not there yet.”

Ryan said “ideally’ he’d like to know who the starter is before the third preseason game (Aug. 29 against the Giants).

CB Dwight Lowery had a strong practice, breaking up several passes in the 11-on-11s and CB Drew Coleman also was sharp, picking off QB Erik Ainge.

Ryan continues to gush about CB Darrelle Revis. When talking about his standout secondary in Baltimore, Ryan said, “We never had anyone like Darrelle Revis. I can say that we’ve got the best corner in the league in Darrelle Revis.”

Ryan was so impressed with LB Vernon Gholston’s work in the goal-line defense drills Tuesday that he said, “We’re going to have him starting in goal line.”

There was one minor skirmish when S James Ihedigbo, who got into it with RB Thomas Jones on Monday, mixed it up with WR Wallace Wright, who threw the ball at him after being separated.

Ryan reported that, after his five days on a liquid diet, he weighed in yesterday morning 20 pounds lighter. He’s gone from 342 to 322.

“I’m now two pounds from my ideal weight or maybe 102 pounds away,” he said jokingly.

DE Shaun Ellis suffered what appeared to be a minor back injury, which took him out of the morning practice.

“It’s no big deal,” Ryan said.

CB Donald Strickland was accidentally kicked in the knee by WR David Clowney, but Ryan said “he should be fine.”

Ryan said NT Kris Jenkins (left calf) and RB Shonn Greene (ankle) are getting closer to returning to practice.

FB Tony Richardson (hip pointer) didn’t practice. Keith Fitzhugh (left shoulder) could be out a while.
