HALE: In Omar’s Defense

BOSTON BEWARE BILLY

The disgruntled outfielder yesterday pledged allegiance to his team, a day after asking out of the starting lineup because he wasn’t happy about an afternoon meeting with general manager Omar Minaya in which the 40-year-old Sheffield’s future — or lack thereof — with the organization was discussed.

Sheffield, who went 1-for-4 with two strikeouts in the Mets’ 4-2 victory over the Phillies last night, said he never asked specifically for a contract extension, but didn’t deny he wanted confirmation from the Mets that he’s part of their 2010 plans. This after Sheffield was recently placed on waivers but pulled back after Minaya couldn’t strike a deal with the team that claimed him, reportedly the Giants.

Sheffield asked to be released during his meeting with Minaya, but will not be granted his wish.

“If a team wants to claim a player and not give us what we feel is value for the player, I still have a responsibility to the manager and the players that are here to win as many games as possible,” Minaya said.

Sheffield said the Mets can count on him for these final six weeks.

“If I don’t have any other options — that they’re not going to release me, I’m going to go out there and show up for my teammates,” Sheffield said. “I’m going to make sure I’m a great teammate.”

Sheffield said Minaya initiated Thursday’s meeting, but the general manager called it a mutual decision to meet. “He wanted to know where he stands, what is his future with the organization?” Minaya said.

That decision, Minaya said, will not be reached until after the season.

Pedro Martinez, who will face the Mets tomorrow, fired a subtle shot at his former team, saying it goofed in not bringing him back this season.

“I feel like my body [was] finally getting to the point where I could help the Mets, and I don’t know if they feel like I was lying or something,” Martinez said. “When I said it, I meant it. I know what I was feeling. Those are the decisions that we make and we’re all responsible for it.”
