WNBA: McCarville’s hoop leads Liberty

Written on the tip of Janel McCarville‘s pink sneaker was the inscription Bonnie Danine McCarvile — 4-17-07. That’s the date she succumbed to cancer. McCarville said she is certain her mom was looking down last night when she hit a running layup with 8.2 seconds left in overtime to lead the Liberty to an 85-83 win over the Connecticut Sun in the Garden on Breast Cancer Awareness Night.

Connecticut’s Anete Jekabsone-Zogota drained a 3-pointer from the corner to tie the score at 76-76 and force OT. McCarville, who hit a similar shot on Sunday to beat Washington, finished with 22 points and 13 rebounds as the Liberty (10-16) posted its first overtime win of the season and snapped a four-game home losing streak. –Lenn Robbins
