A timeline of the Dodgers-Giants rivalry that started in NYC

The Giants and Dodgers — and their fans — have one of the longest and most passionate rivalries in American sport. Here are 10 moments in that rivalry.

— April 27, 1891 — The two franchises meet for the first time as National League rivals; the New York Giants beat the Brooklyn Bridegrooms, 6-5.

— July 12, 1938 — Brooklyn Dodgers fan Robert Joyce shoots and kills a fellow bar patron and bartender after an extended “ribbing” by Giants fans.

— Oct. 3, 1951 — The New York Giants capture the National League pennant as Bobby Thomson hits “the shot heard ’round the world,” a three-run home run off the Brooklyn Dodgers’ Ralph Branca.

— April 15, 1958 — After offseason moves from New York City, the teams begin their West Coast rivalry with the Giants beating the Dodgers 8-0 in San Francisco’s Seals Stadium.

— Aug. 22, 1965 — Giants pitcher Juan Marichal hits Dodgers catcher Johnny Roseboro in the head with a bat at home plate; a bench-clearing, 14-minute brawl ensues.

— Sept. 24, 1981 — Dodgers outfielder Reggie Smith goes into the stands to confront a heckling Giants fan at Candlestick Park in San Francisco.

— Oct. 3, 1993 — The Dodgers celebrate knocking the 103-win Giants out of the playoff race with a 12-1 drubbing at Dodgers Stadium, far from the first time one team has ended the other’s post-season dreams.

— Oct. 7, 2001 — Barry Bonds hits his record-setting 73rd home run of the season against Dodgers pitcher Dennis Springer.

— March 31, 2011 — Bryan Stow, a Northern California paramedic and Giants fan, is brutally beaten by two men dressed in Dodgers gear following the teams’ opening night game in Los Angeles.

— Sept. 25, 2013 — Dodgers fan Jonathan Denver is fatally stabbed in a late-night confrontation near the Giants’ AT&T Park.
