Martha Stewart speaks up for humane treatment of pigs

Martha Stewart wants New Jersey lawmakers to make sure pigs are treated humanely before they wind up in one of her signature roasts.

The lifestyle maven and Jersey City native wrote to the Humane Society urging legislators to stand firm in their support of a statewide ban on confining pigs that are raised for food in tiny gestation crates.

“These animals have committed no crime, yet they’re treated worse than even the most violent criminals would be treated,” wrote Stewart, who as an ex-con knows of what she speaks.

“No prisoner in our state — or country, for that matter — is kept in a cage so small he can’t turn around for months on end.”

Stewart has nothing against eating pork; a search of “pork recipes” on marthastewart.com turns up 7,741 mouth-watering results.

She just wants pigs used for breeding to be able to stand up, lie down, turn around and flex their legs when confined.

But portly Gov. Chris Christie vetoed the bill because of pressure from “out-of-state pork interests,” Stewart said in a statement.
