Sully takes on new role at US Airways

Sully is going back to work but he’ll do more than fly jets.

The Miracle on the Hudson pilot will also take on a new role as part of US Airways’ flight operations safety management team, the airline announced today.

“The months since January 15 have been very full, and my family and I have had some unforgettable experiences,” Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger said in a statement. “However, I have missed working with my colleagues at US Airways and I am eager to get back in the cockpit with my fellow pilots in the months ahead. In my new role, I will continue to be the same kind of advocate for aviation safety that I have been for several decades.”

Sullenberger successfully landed Flight 1549 in the Hudson in January after bird strikes took out both of its engines shortly after takeoff from LaGuardia Airport.

US Airways didn’t say when Sullenberger will return to the cockpit.
