Airline apologizes to Geno for ‘misunderstanding’

It may be the offseason, but that didn’t stop Geno Smith from scoring a touchdown on Thursday.

Virgin America reviewed a dispute between the Jets quarterback and a flight attendant and apologized to Smith, absolving him of any wrongdoing.

“We believe [the dispute] was the result of a misunderstanding that regrettably escalated unnecessarily,” the airline said in a statement. “We’ve apologized to Mr. Smith for his experience …which could have been better — and we’d welcome him back onboard any time. As an airline that prides itself on our guest service, we take incidents such as this one very seriously.”

Smith had been scheduled to fly from Los Angeles to Fort Lauderdale, Fla., last Friday, but he got into an argument with a flight attendant who asked him to remove his headphones. Smith asked to speak to a supervisor, then left the plane on his own and talked to police at the gate.

Airline officials initially told The Post that Smith was removed from the airplane for refusing to stop talking on his cell phone, but the airline’s investigation revealed otherwise.

“I really appreciate that Virgin America took this seriously and looked into this matter and followed up with me,” Smith said in a statement. “I look forward to flying their airline again soon.”
