Rangers’ Gaborik suffers cut in practice

The Rangers, coming off one of their best games of the season Saturday against the Devils, could be without their best offensive player tonight.

Marian Gaborik suffered a deep cut on his right leg when he collided with goalie Henrik Lundqvist at practice yesterday and might sit out tonight’s meeting with the Predators at the Garden.

The Rangers were working on shootout drills when Gaborik and Lundqvist got tangled. As the goalie tried to poke check the puck, Lundqvist’s skate hit Gaborik’s right knee. Gaborik remained on the ice for a few minutes before skating with a limp to the bench.

“Basically Henrik was working on shootouts and Gabby was working on the same thing and they had a collision, and there’s a laceration on Marian’s leg,” assistant coach Jim Schoenfeld said. “He’s being stitched as we speak.”

Lundqvist did not want to speculate how serious the injury might be, saying only that he saw his skate hit Gaborik’s right knee, and that it didn’t appear serious at first.

Schoenfeld said he did not think it was a more serious knee or leg injury, but was unsure if Gaborik would be available tonight against Nashville.

“It would be a guess, and I’d rather not guess,” Schoenfeld said.

If Gaborik doesn’t play, someone else must fill the scoring void. Gaborik, who will play for Slovakia in the Olympics, leads the Rangers with 35 goals and is in sixth in the NHL in points with 69. He has scored six goals in the past five games.

On Saturday, Lundqvist was at his best, stopping 41 Devils shots in a rare night in which the Rangers offense supported him. He knows it could be difficult duplicating the energy the team had this weekend when it plays tonight against a Western Conference team, especially if its best player is out.

“It was good for us to get a good win against a good team,” Lundqvist said. “We want to get any point we can get right now — it is so tight in the standings.”

So tight the Rangers, 4-10 in their past 14 games, sit 10th in the Eastern Conference, but sixth and 12th place are separated by just five points.

“I don’t think anyone is thinking about the break,” Lundqvist said. “Everyone is just so focused on each game and it’s not a concern for any of us. Every game is so important to us right now.”
