People tops ‘Lukewarm List’

Let’s call it The Lukewarm List.

Adweek/Mediaweek’s closely watched Hot List of magazines appears to be anything but, as glitzy publisher Condé Nast was shut out and ad-declining titles made the grade.

For the first time since 2006, Time Inc. powerhouse People magazine was again the No. 1 title — despite a 1.6 percent dip in ad pages. It won praise for extending its brand.

Second-place winner Women’s Health, whose ad pages dropped nearly 12 percent, ranks as the biggest surprise, considering its archrival, Fitness, recorded a 9 percent ad-page jump and was left off the list.

Cosmopolitan, the lone Hearst title, was No. 3, despite a 15 percent decline, drawing kudos for events such as Bikini Bash and StarLaunch.

No. 4 Men’s Health, whose ad pages plunged 22 percent last year, won praise for a small rise in subscriptions and for a best-selling health book co-written by Editor-in-Chief David Zinczenko.

Fifth place went to The Economist, with Sports Illustrated, Runner’s World, Family Circle, More and Scholastic Parent & Child rounding out the top 10.
