Devils close in on Kovalchuk

The Devils’ chances to keep superstar Ilya Kovalchuk grew more likely yesterday after the Kings, the leading suitor, reportedly dropped out of the bidding for the free-agent left wing.

General manager Lou Lamoriello yesterday said his interest continues unabated in the 27-year-old he acquired Feb. 4. The Kings, regarded as the Devils’ biggest NHL competition for Kovalchuk, were reported by the L.A. Times to have decided they have gone as far as they can in bidding for the two-time 52-goal scorer.

After making $7.5 million last season, Kovalchuk likely would reject out of hand any offer below $8 million in annual salary, and the Kings may not have been willing to go above that figure.

The Devils probably aren’t either, while the Islanders are reportedly offering $10 million a year for 10 years.

Kovalchuk reportedly was offered $10 million a year to play in Russia, and before he was traded to the Devils, he rejected the Thrashers’ offers of $70 million over seven years and $100 million over 12 years.
