V-J Day statue celebrates kiss-toric moment

A statue depicting the immortal Times Square kiss that celebrated the end of World War II was unveiled at the Crossroads of the World yesterday to mark the 65th anniversary of the US victory over Japan — V-J Day.

The 26-foot, full-color sculpture of a sailor smooching with a nurse comes in conjunction with a series of events sponsored by the “Keep the Spirit of ’45 Alive!” campaign.

The group is holding a series of events around the country marking V-J Day on Aug. 14.

All will be dedicated to what has become known as the “Greatest Generation.”

Organizers say hundreds of World War II veterans and others are expected to re-enact the famous Life magazine kiss here in the Big Apple.

Edith Shain, who insisted she was the nurse in the Alfred Eisenstaedt photograph, died of liver cancer in June at the age of 91.
