Connick in as ‘Idol’ judge; J.Lo returns

It’s finally official: Harry Connick Jr. and Jennifer Lopez are joining “American Idol” as judges for the Fox show’s upcoming 13th season.

While Connick’s name has been floated throughout the years — virtually every time a judge left the show — Lopez is returning for a second go-round as an “Idol” judge.

She and Aerosmith front man Steven Tyler were judges on Seasons 10 and 11, but were replaced last season by Nicki Minaj and Mariah Carey — who clashed early and often and weren’t asked back.

Randy Jackson, who’d been an judge on “Idol” since the show’s 2002 premiere, will return — but this time as a mentor, filling the slot vacated by Jimmy Iovine.

Ryan Seacrest will return as the show’s host.

Crooner Connick isn’t a complete stranger to “Idol,” having served as a mentor in past years. He’s also performed on the show.

“I have always been a huge fan of ‘American Idol’ and really enjoyed my time as a mentor on the show,” Connick said in a statement.

“And I am honored that they’ve asked me to be a judge this season. As an entertainer, I am truly excited to bring my perspective to ‘American Idol,’ and to help emerging performers find their way.”

Connick and Lopez join returning “Idol” judge Keith Urban — marking the first time in “Idol” history that all three judges are singers.

Connick’s name resurfaced last week as a leading contender after talks between Fox and hip hop artist Dr. Luke reportedly broke down.

Earlier this summer, Fox officials had toyed with the idea of bringing back former “Idol” favorites as judges — with names including Adam Lambert, Jennifer Hudson and Clay Aiken bandied about.

The show, once TV’s top draw — averaging over 30 million viewers — hopes to regain some of its ratings mojo after experiencing heavy viewer dropoff the past few seasons.

“Idol” kicked off its audition round yesterday in Boston.
