7 tracks of summer’s movie trailers

With the onslaught of summer blockbusters upon us, it can be difficult to escape the ubiquitous movie trailers and commercials. That, in turn, means their soundtracks can wiggle their way into the subconscious, slowly cooking in our minds like a corporate Crock-Pot full of beef stew.

But what are these songs that have taken over your life without your permission?

We’ve ID-ed them in hopes of giving you a bit of clarity.

‘The Fault In Our Stars’ (June 6)

The song: “What You Wanted” by OneRepublic

The most liked movie trailer in the history of YouTube is backed by a track from the latest album from OneRepublic, the band behind the current hit “Counting Stars.” We prefer the song from the film’s soundtrack prominently featured in current TV spots though, Charli XCX’s “Boom Clap.”

’22 Jump Street’ (June 13)

Warning: Red band explicit trailer

The song: “Welcome to My Hood” by DJ Khaled feat. Rick Ross, Lil Wayne, T-Pain and Plies

Something tells us these rappers had neither Jonah Hill nor Channing Tatum in mind when they wrote this song.

‘Tammy’ (July 2)

The song: “Gangsta’s Paradise” by Coolio feat. L.V.

Likewise, Coolio most definitely was not imagining Melissa McCarthy holding a gun made out of a paper bag.

‘How to Train Your Dragon 2’ (June 13)

The song: “Kings and Queens” by 30 Seconds to Mars

The third trailer for the sure-to-be-smash hit animated film turned to a 30 Seconds to Mars single from 2009. Call it the Jared Leto Oscar effect?

‘Sin City: A Dame to Kill For’ (Aug. 22)

The song: “Can’t Kill Us” by The Glitch Mob

The highly stylized film offered up a highly stylized trailer accompanied by an angry EDM track.

‘The Hundred-Foot Journey’ (Aug. 8)

The song: “Lanterns” by Birds of Tokyo

The Australian rock band provides the sentimental tone for Ms. Helen Mirren.

‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ (Aug. 1)

The song: “Hooked On a Feeling” by Blue Swede

Marvel makes sure you know this one’s going to have some laughs by using the 1968 hit to comedic effect.
