Chip Kelly turned down job with Giants

Eagles coach Chip Kelly could have been working for Tom Coughlin and the Giants.

While he was coaching at New Hampshire several years ago, Kelly was offered the job of Giants offensive quality control coach. Kelly turned it down.

“It wasn’t coaching a position,’’ Kelly recalled. “It was more that part of, when you get to a point where I was, doesn’t matter what level you’re at, you’re designing offense, you’re calling plays, coaching in an individual position. Even though it’s a huge step up going from New Hampshire to the Giants, that was it. I had all the respect in the world for [Tom Coughlin]. I think he’s a Hall of Fame coach, won two Super Bowls. Would have been a great person to learn from. It was a great job, but it wasn’t the right job at the right time.’’

Cornerback Corey Webster missed the last two games with a groin injury although he was listed as having a hip flexor. He returned to practice and said he will play on Sunday.

“I hate to be on the sideline or watching on TV,’’ Webster said. Aaron Ross, who started in place of Webster, didn’t work because of a back injury.

Running back Da’Rel Scott was waived on Monday and it appears as if Brandon Jacobs will be the recipient of an increased workload behind starter David Wilson.

“Well, certainly Jacobs can get more,’’ Coughlin said. “When called upon, I think he’s still a powerful guy that we’re going to utilize in those short-yardage and goal-line situations.’’

The only other running back on the roster is rookie Michael Cox.

Defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul admitted all concerned are frustrated the Giants as a team have only four sacks.

“This is the New York Giants, normally we have sacks off the roof,’’ Pierre-Paul said.

This is the first chance for the Giants defensive backs to get a shot at Eagles wide receiver Riley Cooper, who caused a huge stir this summer with racist comments caught on video that went viral.

“No comment. I’m not going to touch on that,’’ cornerback Terrell Thomas said. “What he said, it was back then, it’s got nothing to do with this game this week. Obviously, he’s playing, so that’s all that matters.”
