Add another line to Jameis Winston’s rap sheet.
Hours before Winston engaged in a BB gun “battle” that caused damage to the apartment complex where he lived — one of the Florida State’s quarterback’s lesser known run-ins with the authorities — he was handcuffed at gunpoint by campus police for carrying around a pellet gun.
According to a police report obtained by USA Today Sports, around 5 p.m. on Nov. 25, 2012, Winston and teammate Chris Casher were stopped by police after an unidentified person reported two men on campus carrying a “long barreled handgun.”
Officer Anthony Gioannetti wrote in a report, “I believe the suspects may have had a firearm so for my safety and the safety of the other individuals in the area, I drew my firearm from its holster and pointed it at the suspects with my finger outside the trigger guard.”
Winston and Casher had told people that the pistol they were carrying was a pellet gun used to shoot squirrels. The weapon and pellets were seized, and the players were released without charges.
Winston and Casher were investigated later that week for incident took place just hours after the two were stopped by police, in which $4,200 in damage was caused by a BB gun fight at their apartment complex.
Winston has had other legal run-ins during his time in Tallahassee.
Most notably, he accused of rape in December 2012, an incident that only came to light last fall. No charges were filed against Winston following a fraught and lengthy investigation.
In July 2012, a Burger King employee accused Winston of stealing soda, and this April, he was caught shoplifting crab legs from a Publix supermarket, saying he simply forgot to pay for the seafood.
