Steroid-stained baseball legend Roger Clemens appeared in Brooklyn federal court as a federal judge tried to forge a settlement in a defamation suit filed against him by his former personal trainer.
Brian McNamee claims Clemens, who won two championships as a pitcher with the Yankees, slandered him after he told investigators that he injected Clemens with steroids.
Noting the case has dragged on for five years, exasperated Magistrate Judge Cheryl Pollak urged both parties to try to hammer out a deal behind closed doors.
But Clemens and McNamee, who faced off against each other in court for the first time since 2012, couldn’t end their dispute and will be back in court in June.
Pollak ripped Clemens and his high-powered lawyers for trying to stall the proceeding by continually refusing to hand over documents related to the case.
The papers threaten to expose the tactics Clemens and his advisors sought to use to discredit McNamee after he made the explosive accusations against him.
The retired pitcher’s claims the correspondence is protected by attorney-client privilege and has used the defense to delay their release.
The hulking Clemens, who won seven Cy Young awards during his career, drew stares in the court lobby as he walked out after the proceeding.
