Meet NYC’s new top dog

Bulls . . . er . . . bulldogs are charging New York. The American Kennel Club announced the city’s most popular dog breeds for 2013, and the English bulldog took the top slot, booting the Labrador from the No. 1 doggie bed.

The French bulldog — the Brit’s more petite, bat-eared cousin — came in at No. 2, with the Lab falling to No. 3.

“It’s the year of the bulldog in New York City and it’s no surprise,” says AKC spokeswoman Lisa Peterson. “The lovable, family friendly breed is a great choice for the urban lifestyle.”

The German shepherd and golden retriever round out the top five. Meanwhile, the Yorkshire terrier is falling out of favor with New Yorkers. In 2012, the petite pup was the fifth most popular dog breed in the city, but in 2013 it fell to ninth place.

French bulldogs, meanwhile, have seen a meteoric rise over the past decade both in the city and the greater US. The AKC reports a 323 percent increase in national registration for the breed since 2003.

Some New York neighborhoods revealed that they have more idiosyncratic pooch preferences than the city as a whole. In Tribeca, the top dog is the Portuguese Water Dog, on the Upper East Side, it’s the Havanese and in Riverdale, it’s the poodle. Bow wow wow
