CW goes for ‘Virgin’ ground with new show

Producer Ben Silverman loves going South of the Border. Silverman, who brought “Ugly Betty” to ABC, landed another telenovela translation at CW Network this week.

“Jane the Virgin” is an unlikely story loosely adapted from a Venezuelan format about a young girl who promises to save her herself for marriage and becomes accidentally pregnant after being artificially inseminated. Newcomer Gina Rodriguez plays the title character.

Silverman is hoping the show will translate not just for US audiences but around the world, as he’s also picked up international rights. If the series catches on, “Jane the Virgin” may provide a big boost to Juanes, a Columbian singer known as the “Bono of South America,” who could be the next big crossover star. The hunky singer, who is signed to Universal Music, is releasing some new tunes tied to the show.

Silverman told The Post he often fights for unusual show titles in order to entice viewers to give them a try, but he got no argument from The CW boss Mark Pedowitz on this one.
