Two gray Bolivian titi monkeys have been delighting visitors ever since they were born – one Dec. 4 to mom Rachel and dad Jefe, and the other Dec. 7 to mother Limpet and father Tag-Along.

When you’re watching the titi tykes – who each live with their families in separate enclosures at the Monkey House exhibit-one fun thing to see is that their fathers are really into parenting.

“The dad does a lot of caregiving for the offspring,” said Josh Charlton, the zoo’s assistant curator of mammals. “Often, you’ll see the offspring hitching a ride on the dad’s back.”

When the babies are this young, “they pretty much stay on their parents’ backs full-time or they crawl around on the mother to nurse,” he said.

The kiddies won’t get names until it’s determined whether they’re male or female – and there’s no rush to check, said Charlton.

“We wait awhile for baby and mother and father to bond before we go in to find out what sex they are,” he said.
