PRINCIPAL STARES DOWN ‘DISASTER’

Queens PS 49 Principal Anthony Lombardi says that the failure of the state Senate to renew mayoral control would be a complete nightmare for the kids.

“It would be a disaster. All of a sudden, we’re back to 32 school boards. How are you going to go back to school boards? It would be crazy!” he told The Post.

Lombardi said mayoral control has spurred more accountability and creativity, giving him as principal more flexibility to manage his school.

‘POISON PILL’ FOR MAYOR

The principal said his Middle Village elementary school has flourished under a system where responsibility flows to the mayor through the chancellor to the schools.

He said restoring the old Board of Education would lead to a “grab for power” from an array of special interests from politicians to the unions.

“It would be the worst thing that could happen,” he said.
