GAY NUPS GAIN IN NY

ALBANY — A new poll yesterday showed growing support for gay marriage in New York, with voters split 46-46 percent, compared to 55-35 percent against five years ago.

The Quinnipiac University survey also broke down the numbers ethnically, and found African-Americans strongly opposed, 57-35 percent, Hispanics against, 48-45 percent, and whites in favor, 47-45 percent.

Gov. Paterson, the state’s first African-American governor, has strongly urged the Legislature to approve a gay-marriage law, and the Assembly did so on Tuesday. But the Senate appears to lack the votes for passage.

Voters between ages 18 and 34 were in favor, 61-33 percent, while those over 55 were opposed, 55-37. Those between 35 and 54 were in favor, 48-44.
