Indiana ousts No. 1 Michigan; No. 6 ’Cuse falls into Pitt

Indiana beat the nation’s No. 1 team last night and is now in position to reclaim the top spot.

Cody Zeller scored 19 points and Victor Oladipo had 15, leading the No. 3 Hoosiers to an 81-73 victory over top-ranked Michigan in Bloomington, Ind.

It’s the third time in school history the Hoosiers (19-2, 8-1 Big Ten) have beaten the No. 1 team at home, and the first time they’ve done it in back-to-back seasons. The win gives Indiana a five-game winning streak, sole possession of the Big Ten lead and likely the top spot in the country again when tomorrow’s rankings come out.

In addition to Michigan’s defeat, No. 2 Kansas lost 85-80 to Oklahoma State.

It all came on a night when Indiana students were loud and raucous, even dancing in the stands. But they did not rush the court in full force as they did in 2001 when the Hoosiers upset Michigan State or in 2011 when they took down Kentucky, their other home wins against No. 1 teams.

The Wolverines (20-2, 7-2) were led by Trey Burke with 25 points and eight assists. Tim Hardaway Jr. scored 18 in a game Michigan led only once, at 3-2, and spent most of the night playing catch-up after digging themselves an early hole.

Pittsburgh 65, Syracuse 55

In Pittsburgh, Tray Woodall had 13 points, four assists and three steals as Pittsburgh pulled away from No. 6 Syracuse.

Trey Zeigler added six points, four rebounds and four assists off the bench for the Panthers (18-5, 6-4 Big East), who improved to 13-1 against teams ranked in the top 10 since the Petersen Events Center opened a decade ago.

C.J. Fair led Syracuse (18-3, 6-2) with 20 points but the Orange never led in the second half while losing two straight for the first time in nearly two years.

Oklahoma State 85, Kansas 80

In Lawrence, Kan., Markel Brown scored 28 points, Marcus Smart added 25 and Oklahoma State held on to upset No. 2 Kansas, ending the Jayhawks’ nation-leading 18-game winning streak. Ben McLemore had 23 points for Kansas (19-2, 7-1 Big 12).

Florida 78, Ole Miss 64

In Gainesville, Fla., Erik Murphy scored 19 points as No. 4 Florida (18-2, 8-0 SEC) won its 10th straight game beat 16th-ranked Mississippi.

Marshall Henderson led the Rebels (17-4, 6-2) with 25 points.

Duke 79, Florida State 60

In Tallahassee, Fla., Seth Curry scored 21 points and No. 5 Duke (19-2, 6-2 ACC) cruised past defending Atlantic Coast Conference champion Florida State.

California 58, Oregon 54

In Berkeley, Calif., Justin Cobbs made an 18-foot jumper with 1:35 remaining as California hung on to hand No. 10 Oregon (18-4, 7-2 Pac-12) its second straight loss to an unranked team this week.

Butler 75, Rhode Island 68

In Indianapolis, Rotnei Clarke scored 23 points and Roosevelt Jones added 18 to lead No. 9 Butler (18-4, 5-2 Atlantic 10).

Ohio State 63, Nebraska 56

In Lincoln, Neb., Lenzelle Smith Jr. had 21 points and No. 11 Ohio State (17-4, 7-2 Big Ten) held off a late surge.
